#Spartacus: Blood and Sand – The Complete First Season [Blu-ray]# Best Cheap Discount Sales Reviews

Recently, while watching a movie, a trailer for a different film called my attention. It had almost the same awesome production design and photography of “300,” a picture that I truly enjoyed. It turned out that the trailer was not about a film; rather, it was about a TV original series. And what a find it was! “Spartacus – Blood and Sand, the Complete First Season” is what grandiose and majestic entertainment is all about.

The DVD set features all thirteen episodes from the first season, each one approximately fifty minutes long. It properly begins from the beginning, when we first meet Spartacus (not his name at the time), inside a dirty cell, just before he goes out and fight for his life as a gladiator in front of thousands of people that enjoy the killing and dismembering of other human beings. While sitting alone, he begins remembering the conditions that took him there in first place. We are taken back to those happy years, when he enjoyed the love of his wife Sura (Erin Cummings), but his town was always in constant danger from the enemy. Unwillingly, his people – The Thracian — form an alliance with the Romans, who also happen to share the same enemy (the Getae). Unfortunately, the Romans betray their allies, and Spartacus and his wife are separated, both becoming slaves. Spartacus is sent to Capua, in Italy, where he is ordered to be slaughtered in the gladiator arena. However, he survives and quickly becomes a commodity in the gladiator market. Although still a slave, he apparently has the opportunity of getting his freedom back one day, depending on his success as a gladiator.

Spartacus is then sent to a ludus, a place where gladiators are trained, owned by the manipulative and brutal Batiatus (John Hannah), who prides himself of having the best gladiators in Capua. His right-hand man, also a slave, is Doctore (Peter Mensah), an impressive African and ex-gladiator who is in charge of training. Spartacus reluctantly accepts to become a gladiator, but accepts after Batiatus promises him to reunite him with his wife. From then on, seeing his wife again is Spartacus’ main motivation in life. What follows, then, is the history of Spartacus as a gladiator and all the things that he has to endure to survive. Each episode is unique, in which new characters are added or eliminated, and some we get to know very well. There are friendships and envies, love and lust, trust and backstabbing — the entire package that provides for a good series.

“Spartacus – Blood and Sand, the Complete First Season” is meant to introduce us to the Spartacus made famous on film by Kirk Douglas, and the series focuses on his early, formative years, and how he became a leader in the uprising of the slaves against the Roman Empire. But, contrary to the movie version, this series is crude and very much realistic, as well as for mature audiences, with as much blood as you care to see, with plenty nudity and sexual situations, just the way it was during those gruesome years. At the same time, we learn history the hard way. Andy Whitfield shines as Spartacus, as well as the rest of the formidable cast, including Manu Bennett, Lucy Lawless and Nick E. Tarabay. It’s all great, addictive entertainment. The DVD set is loaded with extras, like audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes, gladiator boot camps, and much, much more. (USA, 2010, color, 692 mins).

Product Overview

Betrayed by the Romans. Forced into slavery. Reborn as a Gladiator. The classic tale of the Republic’s most infamous rebel comes alive in the graphic and visceral new series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Torn from his homeland and the woman he loves, Spartacus is condemned to the brutal world of the arena where blood and death are primetime entertainment. But not all battles are fought upon the sands. Treachery, corruption, and the allure of sensual pleasures will constantly test Spartacus. To survive, he must become more than a man. More than a gladiator. He must become a legend.

must own – jbiv16 –
For anybody who loved the movie “300″ or the HBO series “Rome” I highly recommend this DVD. I liked it so much that I almost called into work sick on Monday so that I could finish the series that I had started the previous day. I’m sure most women will not be floored by this but my girlfriend wasn’t turned off by it. It is aptly named Blood and Sand and you should probably add guts, gore, and pure awesomeness to the title.

VERY Entertaining and well made! Another Female perspective… – Touch of Class –
I had heard this compared to 300 which I personally did not care for. Way off! Spartacus takes the scenes from Rome and The Tudors that alot of people really liked and builds an entire series around this. Well Directed and Acted with plenty of Action, Suspense and from a Female perspective “easy on the eyes” Spartacus DELIVERS! You will find plenty of Deception and Drama as in The Tudors and Rome so you really cannot go wrong! :)
